make cool shit or look at cool shit?

April 29, 2014

I am the WORST at falling into the internet wormhole of wasting time. Sometimes it feels like I’ll read articles on ANYTHING.

Am I preparing to be a Jeopardy contestant?

Then why am I boning up on national crime stories, buzzfeed listicles, human interest pieces and literally any other article with a title that captures my attention?

That said, when I caught myself in an internet time-suck loop for the eleventy billionth time I decided to do something about it. After surgically removing my eyes from the screen and prying my atrophied hand off the mouse, I did some laundry, ran some errands and painted this piece.

make cool shit

Make cool shit or look at cool shit? It’s easy for me to rationalize the absurd amounts of time I spend reading shit online as self-education but the truth of the matter is that every minute spent on some dumb site is one that I’m not painting, drawing or otherwise creating. To make it abundantly clear, I mounted it to the top of my monitor so that it will loom over me when I think I need to check Facebook again.

Here are a couple of detail shots.

If on my deathbed I regret that I didn’t spend more time online then slap me silly and call me Susan.

May 23, 2013

Happy Anniversary to me, friends! As of today I’ve been sharing my art and other works with you for 3 years.

This year I’ve already begun working on bigger (and sometimes secret) projects and I can’t wait to share those with you as well!

Thank you for tuning in.

blue pill wall art…

February 5, 2013

…but before that, an announcement: It’s official, my Etsy store is up and running!

I’m selling the same two cards from the Prints and Cards page plus a new 4-pack of hand-lettered thank you notecards!

OK, back to your regularly scheduled programming, I finished one of the two calcium pill projects!

I hung it above a piece by my talented friend, Desi Gunz.

And of course I wanted to paint ALL THE THINGS when I had the spray can out, which is how this blue pumpkin happened…

Cute, non?

stop-motion at the oscars!

January 28, 2013

I’ve been informed that this PES piece is in the running!

Also, it is the sequel to Western Spaghetti.

He is one of my favorite animators. I love these videos and I hope he wins!

In other news, looky looky, I’ve added an improvement! Now you can see my 5 most recent tweets in the sidebar from the homepage (you won’t be able to see them if you came to this post via an email subscription) —->

Warning: Cat-lady content guaranteed.

gif from the met

January 4, 2013

Things started off on the wrong foot at the Met here in New York when the door guard made me throw away $10 worth of fancy-pants sandwiches I had in my purse for later in the day. They wouldn’t even us check them in a bag or coat! Whatever, jerks.

Fortunately, things changed for the better as we wandered around, amazed by how much there was to see and how little of it our tiny brains were going to be able to take in.

I learned that for the most part I really like the work of Paul Klee.

I also made this gif in front of pieces by an artist that I was too caught up in the process to write down. Bad Cat.

NYE 2013 outfit

December 31, 2012

Here’s the spangly sequin dress (and sneakers) that I sported to celebrate the new year.

Do you like webcomics? I DO, and every time I find a new one that I like I feel compelled to read through the complete archives. Often these comic artists ares VERY PROLIFIC and this process can take days if not weeks.

After having recently done this I can say that without a doubt, the comics of Nathan Bulmer are worth the read. In fact, not only are his comics cool, so is he!

Thank you for the award Mr. Bulmer.

NYE outfit rough draft

December 27, 2012

I have long been impressed by people who do daily wardrobe illustrations. Check out Gemma Correll’s cute illustrations here. My friend Kat (pictured below) and I have talked about motivating each other to do something similar for months but it wasn’t until we knew what we were wearing to New Year’s Eve that we finally got our acts together.

Check back for the completed illustration!

calcium pill wall art

November 29, 2012

Here’s a status update on a sort of weird project that I’ve undertaken.

My gigantic Costco jar of calcium supplements recently expired…

… so of course I decided to make an art project out of them. Right? Like normal humans do.

Once I’ve got them all glued down I’m going to paint it and see how it looks. Stay tuned for the final product.

Joanna Goddard of Cup of Jo

November 21, 2012

Surprise, the portrait is of Joanna!

I’ve been a long time fan of her blog Cup of Jo, and recently had the honor of contributing my experiences to a post she did on women that have chosen not to have children.

When she posted a picture of herself applying lipstick for a date with her husband, I just knew I had to draw it.

Check back for a second version later and everyone have a great Friendsgiving!

Here’s my new favorite cooking tutorial if you still don’t know what you’re making tomorrow. Enjoy!

Ps. Don’t forget to pre-order your Advent Calendar, time is running out. Last day to order is November 25th!
